About Yan de Haan

Born in 1952, Jan de Haan traveled the world in his youth and lived in Paris for several years, where he first encountered Japanese Budo. Initially, Jan de Haan studied various martial arts under Master Mochizuki Hiroo.

Shortly thereafter, Jan de Haan left everything behind and went to Japan, where his teacher’s father, Mochizuki Minoru, took him on as a student at the Yoseikan Dojo.

During his repeated visits to Japan, he met Sekiguchi Takaaki, the 21st Grand Master of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. The unique, original style of this Ryu fascinated Jan de Haan so much that he dedicated himself entirely to this Budo discipline.

Sekiguchi Sensei recognized Jan de Haan’s great talent and allowed him to teach Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu in Europe.

In 1987, Jan de Haan founded the Europe Iaido Association and named it Komei-Jyuku.

Kommei-Jyuku is dedicated to the cultivation, preservation, and further development of traditional Japanese Jai-Do and Jai-Jutsu of the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu school. The association is independent and not affiliated with any Japanese authority, and it maintains an old, traditional grading system.
